New Race Fees and Other Changes
The LIRRC is proud to announce the purchase of
the IPICO Chip Timing System. We looked at various systems, and
IPICO was found to be reliable and affordable. It has been used
on Long Island in many road races. The credit card thin chip
will attach to your shoe, it is not disposable, so we will be
collecting them when you cross the finish line.
It has been a long time since we have raised
our race fees. We try to keep our fees stable, but with ever
increasing costs for awards, race supplies and now out new chip
system, we find it necessary to increase our membership and race fees for 2011.
However, compared to other races we still give
you the best bang per mile anywhere, and remember, we will now
have a Chip Timing System.
The new fees are as follows:
$18 Individual Membership
$23 Family Membership
$5 for club members
$4 for members over 60 years old
$10 for non-members
For family members, the fee will now be:
$5 for the first family member (same household), and $3 for each
additional family member.
Our kid's summer fun run fees will stay the same $1.
Newsletter
Since Printing and mailing costs have
skyrocketed, the club must find a more cost effective way to
deliver the newsletter. Electronic format and delivery
eliminates the cost of printing and mailing. So with this 2nd.
edition of the new newsletter we are advancing into a new age,
and we are going "Green." Some of you may have already received
the newsletter as part of an email, but if not we hope you enjoy
the new newsletter by clicking on the newsletter link above.
New Race Registration
Deadlines
To keep with USATF Registration Rules, we will
be closing registration 15 minutes before race time. That means
for Sunday races starting at 9 AM registration will close at
8:45 AM, and the Wednesday Night Summer Series races starting at
7PM registration will close at 6:45 PM.
USATF Rule 242
All competitors are responsible for knowing
the starting time of the event(s), for knowing the registration
or check-in method utilized at the start, and for being at the
starting line at the appointed time for instructions and the
start of the race. Ten to fifteen minutes (or as otherwise
specified) before the start of the race, all entries should be
closed and the athletes directed to the starting line for final
instructions and the start of the race.
NO EXCEPTIONS!!
Please don't come late and beg us to register
you. If you miss registration, you can always help out. These
registration rules are common at other races, and are necessary
because our races are always day-of-race, and all registrants
have to be entered into the database prior to the race. Please
plan to get to the race leaving you time to register. Your
cooperation is appreciated.
President’s Message – December 2011
Here we are again; it’s the end of the year.
Where did the time go? I know we always hear
people say that but it seems time is going by faster these days.
There comes a time in life when we seem to
reflect more on our lives and those close to us, and what they
mean.
Running has been a big part of my life for
many years, and what it has given me is priceless. Most of the
things I have experienced have been wonderful.
Being part of the LIRRC race team, we have
put on hundreds of races over the years always doing our best to
give runners what we feel that we would
want in are race if we ran in it, A friendly, low cost,
fun event. And with the help of quite a few talented people, we
have accomplished that. In running in more races than I could
ever remember over the years, and being in Eisenhower Park
almost every week, I have met so many friends that I would never
have met otherwise. And I am richer for it. Running is such an
enriching sport, bringing people from different walks of life
together by a common thread, their love of running. How lucky
are we? How lucky am I.
Although this may sound like someone
reflecting on his life at the end of running, it is certainly
anything but the end.
There is much to look forward to. We are
looking forward to a terrific 2012, starting with our New Year’s
Day 5 Mile Hangover Run on Sunday January 1st.
Last year 200 hardy souls came down to kick off the New
Year right. A new year is approaching, and with that brings hope
for better days.
In giving thanks, I always hesitate to name
names because of the fear of forgetting someone, but here goes.
Thanks go out to Bob Patterson (technical
guru/webmaster), Colin Harris, Peter Cirona, Joyce Patterson,
Kathy Agricola, Juan Oliveras, Sally Robison for being so
dedicated in helping to put on race after race.
And thanks to our other board members Adriana
Staiano (team co-captain), Mike Ogazon (the email blaster), Jim
Thornton (counsel), and Dave Philippi (big helper). Others who
help make us a better club like Kevin Wizbicki (on the bike),
Joe Tracy supervising the water stop, always a big relief to see
him, Vera Lightfoot, so enthusiastic, Bob McVetty, the straw
that stirs the drink, and of course, Dennis Boyd, who is so
valuable a friend. And a big thank you to Jim Ferguson, our
great newsletter editor, who does such a terrific job writing
our newsletter. And also a big thanks to so many others who
pitch in here and there for us.
As we approach this holiday season, it’s a
good time to look back, reflect, look forward to a better year,
and run.
On behalf of the LIRRC, I would like to wish
everyone a happy and safe Christmas, Chanukah, and anything else
you may celebrate.
We’ll see you in the park!

Cell Phones For Soldiers
Throughout our country's history, there have
been selfless people who have stepped up to answer America's
call. Let us not forget our men and women in uniform, and let us
always let them know they are appreciated for the sacrifices
they and their families make for us. What can we do to show our
support of our men and women in uniform? There are many ways,
and the Long Island Road Runners Club has decided to partner
with Senator Dean Skelos in the "Cell Phones for Soldiers"
program. Each week at our races, a collection box will be
available to collect old cell phones. This is a close-to-home
cause, as LIRRC President Fred Haslett's son, Staff Sgt. Fred
"Rick" Haslett of the NC Army National Guard, is currently at a
base in southern Baghdad, on his second deployment in support of
Operation Iraqi Freedom. Our soldier's calls home are not free,
even from Iraq and Afghanistan, and especially from their coming
and going stays in Kuwait. They can pay as much as $5 per minute
to call loved ones. Our collection helps them stay in touch with
loved ones. Let's do out part.
God Bless our
troops!

The story of these two youths who started this
program is inspiring.
